Persephone In The Underworld

When Zeus subdued the giant monsters and placed them underground, it created earthquakes and volcanoes. Pluto was concerned about losing part of his kingdom, and came up to inspect. Venus spotted Pluto in his chariot, and had Cupid shoot an arrow into his heart. It filled him with desire and love.

The young Persephone was playing with her friends in the fields of Eleusis, filling her basket with wild flowers. Pluto saw her, fell immediately in love with her, and ravished her away on his chariot to Tartarus. Persephone�s mother, the goddess Demeter, searched endlessly but could not find her. Finding a portion of Persephone�s girdle, Demeter curses the earth and the green plants all wither. The spring of Arethusa intercedes, and tells her the truth --

Persephone is now Queen of the Underworld, and
the wife of Pluto. Demeter appeals to Zeus for her return, and Zeus complies on the condition that Persephone has not taken any food, but it is too late. Persephone has accepted a pomegranate from Pluto, and tasted the pulp of it�s seed. She must reside with her mother no more than half of each year. The remaining time she must spend with her
husband in Hades.
